I’ve been in the foodservice business for over 20 years and have worked with over 100+ business locations, led the sales of over $10M in hospitality operations, and directed teams of 70+ to execute consistent success in the industry. As an author and entrepreneur, I’m excited to bring you steps for success every month to help you take your business to the next level!
This month, I’m looking at four ways you can capitalize on Back to School:
August is back to school month. While parents are busy shopping for school supplies, clothes and readjusting their daily schedules, your foodservice location can step in and meet their mealtime needs during this seasonal transition. Promote Family Meal deals to increase the basket rings at your register! Make it simple by having limited protein and side choices. This is what we recommend:
The reason to keep it simple is that it reduces decision fatigue. A customer can make a quick choice and then you can deliver value with your amazing food combined with fast friendly service.
Don’t forget the teachers who are also coming back to work after being off for the summer! That is an entire workforce now driving to and from work 5 days a week. Celebrate and recognize them by visiting schools close to your store and dropping off teacher appreciation and recognition promo cards. These could be $2 off meals, free drinks with meals, Bogo breakfast sandwiches, buy 9 get 10th free type offers. The goal is to make your store a part of their normal daily traffic patterns so they visit again and again.
While also at the school, you can work with the administration to see if you can provide free food certificates to student award winners. Students often are presented awards for things like reading, being a positive example, and showing improvement in a class. Many schools will present a free gift certificate or free food card along with the award to students. Consider awarding students with something like a free slice of pizza or a free meal card.
Students will feel proud to have earned a certificate and award for their hard work, and they will share that excitement with their friends and family. When recipients come into redeem their free meals, more likely than not, their parents will come too and will make an additional purchase.
As school season begins, now is also a time to connect with school sports activities. Many have outdoor banner programs where your branding can be on display at every game for a donation. This can also often include audio announcements during the game and possible school spirit shirts featuring your logo.
When you give back to your community, your community notices. Businesses who are more connected with the community will gain loyalty from the locals. What you do is more than transactions, its relationship building with your customers and community.
